Abstraction

An exploration in abstraction, from realistic/concrete to non-realistic/abstract.

Project: The aim of this assignment was to abstract an image or an object - beginning with a concrete/realistic image, then gradually abstracting it across 5 images, removing information (lines, colour, shape, etc.) to reach a non-realistic/abstract image. We were also supposed to incorporate framing techniques and abstract the frame along with the object/image chosen.

Process: Beginning with a photo I took of a branch from the cherry trees out in front of Kaplan, I removed the background and focused in on a particular segment I found most interesting. From there I began my abstraction, beginning with the removal of form and some colour (image 2 is an illustration), then the removal of all colour, moving to a hand-drawn sketch and finishing with only shape and gradient remaining.
